Campaign at a Glance The theme of Safe Kids Week 2008 is Pedestrian Safety. - Walking is a widely accessible recreational activity for children and families. It is also a child's first means of transportation. However, it carries risks for serious injury and death for children.
- Child pedestrian injuries are the third leading cause of death for children under the age of 14.
- This year's campaign will encourage drivers to reduce their driving speed in residential areas.
- Caregivers and parents will be encouraged to revisit pedestrian safety rules with children and provide children with opportunities for guided practice.
Issue Pedestrian injury is the third leading cause of injury-related death to Canadian children. Problem Cars moving at a speed of over 30-40 km/h present a greater risk to pedestrians. Solution - Environment, Enforcement and Education Small reductions in speeds can reduce injury risk creating safer environments for walkers of all ages. Benefits of reaching Road Safety Targets for Pedestrians: a 'win-win-win' Walking is a healthy, 'green' alternative that can be encouraged through urban planning and the enforcement of maximum traffic speeds.
