10 Years...
It was 10 years ago that the vision of a steering committee put together by the Grande Prairie & District Chamber of Commerce led a passionate group to have Grande Prairie become a designated safe community. Grande Prairie & Area Safe Communities can showcase many successes over the past 10 years, but our work is not over! We ask you to join us in the fight against injuries being the #1 cause of death and disability for Alberta's children and adults. Thank you to everyone who was able to come out and celebrate with us on November 12th. A very special thank you to Paul Kells for visiting Grande Prairie and sharing his story with us. It was interesting to realize some of the changes to injury issues that have happened over the past 10 years... seat belts, car seats, bicycle helmet legislation, drinking and driving, the use of cell phones, texting... I hope those in attendance took some of Paul's challenges to heart. Could you commit to not using your cell phone while driving? Is a cell phone conversation worth a life?Congratulations to our Ambassador for Safety Award winners. Organization Award - Grande Prairie Shriners Club
Business Award - Devon Canada Corporation
Volunteer Award - Tim Meyer and Donna Kulba

Congratulations also to Donna Kulba who was presented with the 2009 Safe Communities Canada Founders' Award. The Founders' Award is personally chosen by Paul Kells, the founder of Safe Communities Canada, and recognizes one individual in Canada whose contribution to the cause of injury prevention and safety promotion is worthy of particular recognition. Please see the release for more information.
